Storbritannien beslagtar iranskt tankfartyg

UTRIKES. Storbritanniens flotta beslagtog igår en iransk oljetanker i Gibraltar. Anledningen sägs vara att fartyget skulle bryta mot EU-sanktioner.

Under gårdagen beslagtog Storbritanniens flotta, i samarbete med Gibraltars polismyndighet, en iransk oljetanker i Gibraltar. Fartyget sägs ha varit på väg till Irans allierade Syrien med råolja, något som påstås bryta mot EU:s sanktioner.

Beslagtagandet kommer i ett skede där USA nyligen infört nya sanktioner mot Iran och Spaniens utrikesminister Josep Borrell hävdar att britterna gjort beslaget på amerikansk begäran. Han säger även att Spanien, som betraktar vattnen utanför Gibraltar som sitt territorialvatten, håller på att bedöma konsekvenserna av operationen.

Situationen har fått Iran att kalla upp den brittiska ambassadören i landet för att protestera mot vad man kallar det ”olagliga beslagtagandet av den iranska oljetankern”.
